Teaching Philosophy
It is important for me as a music educator to help my students cultivate a love and appreciation for all music and to instill in each student the knowledge and practices needed to become successful musicians. When my students graduate from my elementary music classroom, there is no greater satisfaction for me than to see my students continue their music education through the band and choir programs. About Mrs. Surface Mrs. Surface loves teaching children to love music!
Mrs. Surface is in her 20th year teaching elementary music. Mrs. Surface has taught at Ridgeview since its opening in 2011 when she moved from the Early Learning Center. She has also taught in Birdville ISD and Waxahachie ISD. Mrs. Surface earned a Bachelors in Music Education with oboe emphasis from Baylor University and a Masters in Music Education from Texas Tech University. Mrs. Surface is a Hudson Transformation Grant Recipient, a two-time Keller Education Foundation Grant Recipient, a three-time Texas Music Educators Association Grant Recipient, and the 2017-18 Ridgeview Elementary Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Surface lives in Keller with her husband Dean, two daughters Kennedy and Mckinley, and her dogs Pete and Tuck. Dean teaches band at Timber Creek High School in Keller ISD. Kennedy, Keller High School alum, is a freshman at Baylor University studying music and is a member of the Baylor University Golden Wave band, Baylor Wind Ensemble and the Baylor Symphony Orchestra (like her parents before her). Mckinley is a sophomore oboist and varsity member of the Keller High School Marching Band where she plays mellophone and has served as librarian and section leader. Both daughters are Ridgeview Alumni. In addition to maintaining a small, private oboe studio, Mrs. Surface loves spending time with her family, reading, singing karaoke and attending concerts. |
